A Journey through Dramatic Terrain

Chugging its way through dramatic terrain, vast tea plantations and copious pine forests is the eastbound train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, onwards to Ella and Badulla. The nine-arch bridge between Ella and Damodara stations is a particularly breathtaking structure and an exemplary piece of colonial-era railway construction. Many first-class cabins come with observation saloons and classic interiors, a preferred option for travel along these scenic routes. But, travel on any of the other classes is just as memorable and possibly livelier, with musicians and food vendors, reminiscent of an Indian train.
