Wild Tasmania

Separated from the mainland is Tasmania, Australia’s island-state. While Tasmania is known for its splendid vistas and vibrant festival scene, on the one hand, it also harbours important stories from the country’s dark past. Port Arthur, a convict settlement during the 19th century, houses the notorious Separate Prison- where inmates were once punished by seclusion and sensory deprivation. In the capital city of Hobart, the gallows and execution yard of Hobart Convict Penitentiary provide a glimpse into the state’s criminal past, while the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery highlight Aboriginal history. Watching over the city is the robust Mt Wellington, with hiking and cycling trails, besides beautiful views. Tasmania is also known for its national parks. Among them is Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair, home to Cradle Mountain, glacial lakes and rich rainforests.
