Step into a fairy tale

Bruges is everything you imagine Europe to be! Spellbinding medieval architecture, a winding canal and atmospheric streets, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sight for sore eyes. Walk its cobbled lanes and soak in the city or enjoy fabulous views from a boat tour along the canal. A climb to the top of the Belfry affords sweeping views of the city below. Visit the Groeningemuseum to see some of the fine works of Flemish art, and the one-of-a-kind Museum Sint-Janshospitaal with many weird exhibits. Later, find a table in one of the many cafes lining the Markt, the old market square and do some people watching.

The industrial city of Ghent is in the midst of urban renewal of sorts, and a large student population ensures that the mood is always upbeat and cheery. Like all European towns, there's a lot of history on offer, so start with the Sint-Baafskathedraal, and see one of the earliest-known oil paintings, The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. Walk through the Gravensteen, a 12th-century stone castle before you get a drink in one of the many quirky bars the town is known for.
