City Charms of Port Louis & a Colonial Detour

Get a feel of the country's colonial past, with a visit to Maison Eureka. Lush gardens and a brimming river, provide the perfect backdrop to this unique Creole house, dating back to 1830. Go on a guided tour of its extensive estate and end with a meal including a variety of traditional Mauritian dishes.

The capital of Mauritius and the largest city on the island, Port Louis, is a heady mix of different cultures. At the Aapravasi Ghat (immigration depot in Hindi), a UNESCO World Heritage site, learn about indentured slavery that was prevalent back in the day and how it eventually ended. For stunning views, head up to the Citadel or Fort Adelaide, a fort that was built to protect the city.

With the help of a guide, or on your own, explore the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Gardens, considered to be one of the best botanic gardens in the world. The highlight is a pond filled with the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, that were brought to the island all the way from South America.
