Hong Kong's Many Faces

With a futuristic vision rooted in deep tradition, so much comes together in Hong Kong—and there’s no better place to start exploring than at the top. Head to Victoria Peak, Hong Kong island’s highest point, and you will be swept away in the enchantment of its skylines, rolling landscapes and spectacular walking trails. This, and much more, is accessible by Hong Kong’s 130-year-old Peak Tram, an unmissable experience in itself. Another landmark is Repulse Bay, famous for its crescent-shaped beach, at one end of which you will find a space devoted to the deities of Kwun Yam, the goddess of mercy, and Tin Hau, the goddess of the sea. It’s another Tin Hau temple that lends its name to the Temple Street Night Market in the Yau Ma Tei district of Kowloon. Everything from teaware to trinkets is available in this plucky, electrifying part of town. Also highlighting Hong Kong’s maritime connection are quaint fishing villages like Aberdeen and Shau Kei Wan, home to the Tankas or ‘boat people’.
