Johannesburg – a city reborn

A city with a marred history, Jo'burg or Jozi, as Johannesburg is popularly referred to, is experiencing a revival. Several parts of the city that were once considered no-go zones, like Maboneng, have now transformed into the coolest parts of the city, full of galleries and shops. Take a cycle tour and explore Jo'burg's favourite hipster hangouts.

For history buffs, Jo'burg offers plenty of avenues to dig deeper into South Africa's troubled past. Begin at the Apartheid Museum that traces the rise and fall of apartheid in the country through multimedia exhibits. At Constitution Hill, one of the most significant historical sites in the country, visit the place where Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were both imprisoned. Walk through the Soweto Township that produced three Nobel Peace Prize winners. Present day Soweto is a vibrant neighbourhood that reflects the changing face of South Africa.

Visit the Sterkfontein Caves, a world heritage site where Dr Robert Bloom excavated the famous 'Mrs. Ples', one of the most perfect pre-human skulls ever found. View the permanent hominid exhibit and take the walkway into the impressive caves where much of the excavations were made.
