The Vegas of the East

Macau may be known as Hong Kong’s snazzy neighbour, but along with its signature glamour, Macau holds a wealth of history and culture. Its Portuguese colonial history is perhaps best preserved in Taipa Village, where colonial-style homes and churches stand alongside traditional Chinese shops. Nearby in Coloane, the old way of life remains firmly intact amidst historical sites, shipyards and beaches. Connecting Taipa and Coloane is Cotai, a strip of land lined with mega-resorts and casinos reminiscent of Las Vegas, including the cinema-themed Studio City and the uber-luxurious Morpheus hotel designed by Zaha Hadid. The Ruins of St Paul’s, a 17th-century Jesuit church in Macau Peninsula, and the lofty Macau Tower, complete with observation decks, a climbing wall and a bungee jump facility, are among other highlights. Macau is accessible from Hong Kong via ferry—an enjoyable experience not to be missed.
